Sex Crime Information
Merely being accused of a sex crime can ruin a person’s life. If you are charged with a sex crime, or believe that you may be under investigation for one, contact Graham Fisher or another qualified attorney immediately. It is critical that you contact an attorney prior to talking to anyone, especially prior to talking with the police. if you are the subject of an investigation, it is very likely that the state has already decided that you are guilty, and that anything you say can and will be used against you—no matter how adamently you deny the claims.
Sex crimes are now more widely prosecuted and harshly punished than at any other point in history. This increase in the volume of the charges has caused more false claims to slip through the cracks. In addition, sentences are exponentially higher. Acts that would have received a sentence of treatment and probation 20 years ago, now can result in a sentence of decades in prison, a lifetime of sex offender registration, and chemical castration for people aged 15 and over.
Examples include:
- In Oregon, a 24 year-old female social worker who with no criminal record, who was found by the court to have lived an exemplary life, and made a very positive impact into the lives of many children, was given a sentence of 75 months and lifetime sex offender registration after she was convicted of Sex Abuse for grazing the back of a 13 year-old student’s head against her clothed chest in a crowded room. - In Arizona, a man was placed on lifetime sex offender probation and lifetime GPS monitoring for having consensual sex with a 14 and 16 year-old girl when he was between 18 and 20. (source)
- In Louisiana, a proposed law would provide for chemical or physical castration for a 19 year-old, with no prior criminal behavior, for a first instance of a consensual sexual contact with a 16 year-old. (source)
- In Georgia,it took a national outcry to convince the courts to overturn a 10 year prison sentence for consensual oral sex between a 17 year-old honor student and a 15 year-old (after he had served 2 years of the sentence). (source)
- Under Oregon law, a person can find their lives permanently damaged due to a mistake made when they were 14, even if they are rehabilitated. (source)
